Lady GaGa The Next Madonna?

Lately every time I have listened to the radio, I hear a song by Lady GaGa. "Bad Romance" is her latest hit, her melodies and chorus are very catchy and once you listen to them you have them stuck in your head all day. Lady Gaga is the new big thing in the music industry these days. She is known for her quirky style, and over the top music videos and live shows. For example her live show at the MTV music awards sparked a lot of interest. She ended with her hanging on the ceiling, covered in blood. It is just not on the radio, shes all over the news and making headlines all around the world. Her crazy outfits have every one talking and everyone wondering if shes actually a human. There are many crazy rumors out there for example one popular rumor going around is that she is actually a trans-gender. I personally don't believe that she was actually born a man. She's a lot like the queen of pop Madonna always changing her image and giving everyone something to talk about. Their sound is similar and they both have the abilities to make a hit song. Despite all Lady GaGa's crazy stunts and rumors she makes good music. She has a wonderful voice and her songs have become popular all around the world. She is not only taking the music industry by storm, but also is doing it in her own unique style. She does not conform to the conventional ways in getting noticed, and does not care what the world thinks. She is a great musician that deserves a lot of respect.

Motivation.

As I read my blogs I feel like a hypocrite, and as us young people say these days say a "hater". Most of my blogs have been about how Technology and Media are negative things that only distract us. I realized that this is not true and that i have been "hating" on it and it is wrong. Technology is not all bad, it actually makes my life easier. The internet has opened so many doors, and now we can buy, search, and view almost anything in the world. I have grown as a person and have matured alot, it has not been easy and these last six months I have used my laptop and internet as therapy. After along day I would immediately run to my computer and log on to the internet to escape all the stress from school, soccer, and my social life. I would listen to music, watch movies and youtube videos to get my mind of things. It was like my drug and I became addicted to it, it made things go away and make me feel good for a few hours. Unlike other drugs this one did not have any health consequences.
However it did have one side effect. Earlier in the year when my soccer season had just started I was lacking motivation and determination. I thought because I was now playing for a division one soccer program I had made it. My bubble was bursted when I found my self sitting on the bench and watching the game from the sidelines. I could of easily just gave up and settle for playing a few minutes towards the end of the game but instead I pushed my self a little more at practice. Late at night before I went to sleep I would open up my laptop and watch 3 to 4 videos of my favorite players to keep get me motivated for the next day's practice. Youtube helped me get a starting spot on the BC's soccer team. It help gave that extra push to keep me working. I owe technology and apology for criticizing it so much, I also owe it a thank you for helping out and making my life easier.

You Are So Gay.

"You are so gay." this is common used phrased that is used among us college students. It is used when someone does something you do not agree with. For example the other day one of my teammates was singing a song called "Party In The USA" by Miley Cyrus, and another of my teammates felt like that it was immature of him to sing that song and used this infamous phrase. I did not say anything but i for sure thought about it and I ask myself, "Whats so Homosexual about that." I have heard this phrase alot growing and I do not quite get it. Saying “That’s so gay,” is a common mistake for “That’s so dumb.” No longer does “gay” signify a joyous sensation or even always relate to homosexuality, but jumps right to the insulting position to insinuate stupidity. Well, if “gay” now means stupid, but gay also refers to homosexuality, then what are people really saying: homosexuals are crazy and stupid? It is doubtful that people even do this simple sequence when they include “gay” in their everyday vocabulary, otherwise it may not be as prevalent. The lack of thought in conversation is even more pathetic than saying it purposely. A key concept in conversation is thinking before speaking, but that apparently is no longer the trend.

My Blogging Expereince

"Blogging? umm whats that bro?" this is what my roommate Sacir said the first time he stepped into this class. I had no idea what it was so I could not answer his questions. I had always heard people talk about it but never had the curiosity to actually find out what it was. Once I found out what it was I came to realize that it was kind of fun. I never was involved in an environment were I could express my opinion about a subject without having to worry about worrying what people thought. I felt like I was a news reporter writing articles for my own newspaper ran by me. It was nice to share my thoughts and have people comment on them. It was a nice change from academic writing. I did not have to worry about being so formal and I could pretty much say what I wanted.
I did not think I was going to have fun and actually write about things that I saw going on around me. I felt so free when I wrote my blogs. I actually enjoyed doing this and as i started writing more and more i felt more comfortable. I felt like could write about more sensitive and controversial subjects as time went on. I would recommend that every one keep a blog and share their opinions about what is going on in the world today. It is like a private diary but not as private.

Looks over Talent.

It is every athletes dream to make the cover a magazine. Magazines like Sports Illustrated,Soccer America, and Rize are some of the ones athletes hope to land a cover on or maybe even a small segment. It is the ultimate to see yourself on the cover and have someone read about you and look at your picture. Before it was the athletes who dominated their sport and accomplish great things the ones who made these magazines covers. Now because everything is about making money and we are in love with materialistic things is the athletes who look good with their shirts off or in a bikini who make the front of every magazine.
Our society has become very accepting with sexuality, and it is not a big deal to have a half naked, attractive person in front of a magazine. Models dedicate their time to having the perfect body and maintain a beautiful face, it is their job to be feature in magazines. The job of an athlete is to work hard at practice so they can perform at a high level for every match. In a game, match, or race looks do not matter and will not help you win. It is an athletes willing to win, heart, and determination that gets them to the top. I am tired of seeing athletes who have not accomplish, or won any big competitions getting praised by the media. The media overrates athletes with good looks. Every one in the industry wants those athletes who look on camera to advertise there products and make an appearance in there magazines. It is not the athletes who win games, or the one who carries a team on his back and takes them to the championship the ones who get all the love and attention
For example David Beckham, he is not a bad soccer player but it is definitely not the best player on the English National Team but he is the one that every reporter wants to interview and hes the one that every female wants a picture with. Beckham has used this to his advantage and it is the reason why hes the most recognized soccer player in the world. Underwear adds for Calvin Klein, movies, and being married to a Spice Girl also have helped him earn all this recognition. He has never one a world cup but still people all over the world praise him and put him on a pedestal. He has done alot for the sport and respect his life style but at the same time he has corrupted the beautiful game of soccer.

America's Number One Trusted News Anchor: JON STEWART!?

Is it sad when the number one news channel that average American's turn to in this time of instability is a Comedy Central professional comedian? Yes! According to a Times magazine on-line poll, ever since Walter Cronkite's unfortunate death, Jon Stewart is America's Most Trusted News Anchor. Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's Daily Show, uses his humor to foil
top stories and his humor to uncover the truth. Stewart often uses past video recordings of Fox, CNN, and other news anchors, compares them to there more recent broadcasts and blatantly exposes they're biased reporting. While it is inevitable for an anchor to have an unbiased opinion, Jon Stewart makes an effort to bring on affiliates of outside news channels, or ambassadors of countries, or even other comedians.

I personally believe, that when America chooses a comedian over people who are amazing anchors such as Anderson Cooper, Katie Couric and Brian Williams, things need to change. Jon Stewart is undoubtly funny, and can really connect to his audience whether they are young or old. Jon goes on record claiming that he is a mere comedian but if you have seen his show you notice that his humor is used on both sides of the political scale. The reason that Jon is able to pick apart new stories and comment on politicians is because he does not have to play by the same rules as other news anchors. Ratings, while an important part of keeping the show on air, do not play such an important role in the subject matter he address. Channels such ass CNN and Fox, give in to the will of the people in that they have to address subject matter pertaining to theyre core audiences and are in constant competitian with each other. Jon's show has a less structured format then most others, like his counter-part Colbert, anchor of Colbert Report and author of a political satire, these men can take the time to dissect the new's stories in a way that no other can. The Fact that his show is on late at night only adds to his advantage. Not having to rival popular shows, Jon does what he whats when he wants, and the audience loves it.
Jon is an anomaly, a rarity that we must take advantage of while we can. Can we trust him? Who knows. Should we watch him and enjoy his humor as he intended it to be? The answer to that, is yes.

"Hardly home but always reppin' "

Being away from home can be a tough experience as some of us freshman have come to realize. Specially those who come from other states and are miles away from their hometown and family. This can make it hard to focus on school and extracurricular activities. I have now been away from my family and friends for 5 months and i can not wait to go home. It is hard not being able to be around them but because of the technology advances we have today it makes you feel like you are alittle closer to home. Things like Skype, Ichat, and other forms of communications make it easy to converse with close ones. when times get hard these applications make it easy to talk to family and that way i get to express my feelings and relieve my stress. It's like they are in the room with a me even though they are thousands of miles away. We criticize technology but it is not always negative, if it is used responsibly it can benefit us.

Facebook Frenzy

So now that I am in college I have realized that time is of the essence. By saying this I mean that there is not enough time in the day to do all the things that you need to do. Take my situation for example, I have four classes, and soccer practice, and all the while, I have to be doing homework for other classes not in my schedule tomorrow. What I've noticed however, is no matter how much I try, no matter if I mute the radio, turn off the TV, and sit in the common room all alone, I cant seemed to focus. The bottom of my computer screen is always popping up and displaying new messages and notices that I have received on Facebook, and I cant seem to leave the red blinking notice box alone. Facebook has turned into an addiction, what with it being not just a computer activity, you can now check status, see pictures, and take all the "what kind of animal would you be" tests straight from your phone!

Even while I am writing this blog, my friend Devon visiting me from California is on Facebook...and boy do i envy him. Facebook to me is a way to keep in contact with friends you would otherwise not see all to often. Being from California, i have a lot of family and friends i feel the need to talk to on a regular basis. When used wisely Facebook can be a valuable asset in this world, where what really matters is who you know. But society has now turned what was once a good thing, into a menace. Stop and smell the roses? Most people don't take the time to look up from they're Iphone screens to even finish homework now-and-days.

The face book epidemic is inevitable, and eventually it will corrupt the mind of the youth, causing a decline in the working class. i suggest that there a proposed regulation of social networking to regulate the amount of things we expose our children to, or at least ask Miley Cyrus to delete her Facebook causing the sending the Facebook population into a downward spiral ending in the website shutting down.... again.

How Media Affects Self Image

It seems to me like teens now a days are too focused on appearance and how other people view them. Mass media influences these ideas and brainwashes our generation into feeling the need to conform. Teenagers are trying to hard to to fit in, or have "the look." For example, the show America's Next Top Model affected one of my friends in a very unhealthy way. She told me how she always wanted to be a model. However, they care too much about your size that she was discouraged. I know this happens a lot because the media portrays to the public that one must be thin, have high fashion, and have natural beauty. This causes self consciousness, discouragement, and unhealthy habits for our and younger generations. Even younger kids are starting to transform the way they act and look in order to be like their role models on television and in the magazines. Kids are beginning to apply make-up, speak inappropriately, and dress more revealing than they have in the past. If the media did not put such a heavy influence on appearances, our world today would would be more classy and people would be happier and healthier with themselves.

Why is the Music Industry Dying?

I remember when i was in fifth grade and got my first cd player. It was the happiest day of my life, i could finally listen to the music i liked and not what the radio was playing. All I could think about is going to the Music store and buy new albums to listen to. There were so many genres and different artist, it was hard just to buy only one. That was then, now I do not remember the last time I actually bought a an album. Actually I do not remember the last time I visited a music store, do those things even still exist? Ever since the Ipod was invented, the downloading of music has sky rocketed. Everyone just logs on to their computer then access their itunes account and they get all the music they want. Instead of buying the whole album, now we can just download the first single of an artist number. This affects the number of album copies an artist sells, not to mention the money they make. Everything is so digital now, there is no more fun in going out and buying and album and getting the album cover. It is just more convenient to buy your music from where u are sitting than making a trip to your local music store. Alot of music stores have run out of business because of this evolution of buying music. This is making it easier for some artist to break in to the music indusrty, but this is not a good thing. Now the music that is put out, is anything but good. Artist of this day can make serious money buy putting a track out with a catchy chorus and have a hit. This is killing the music industry and making music is not an art anymore is just an easy way too make money.

Who are our heroes today?

It seems like today kids do not look up to their older brother and sisters or even look up to the world leaders who are changing the world. What happened to the good days when fire fighters, Doctors, and teachers were the people respected in the society. They were the people who made a difference and who even saved other peoples life. Now with the evolution of media and with it being a major part of our lives is the people who make the headlines of TMZ, Sports Center, and the person who has the number one song in the country the one who everyone idolizes and adores. Athletes are always on tv and have a great responsibilities on their shoulders, they not only have to play their sport but now because of all the exposure they have to behave and act in a proffesional manner. If not it does not only bring a bad image to them but it also affects the lives of the people watching including the kids who look up to them. Athletes are not bad role models, they are hard working people and have gone through alot to be where they are. Some don not realize the responsibility they have and abuse the money they make and set a bad image on them selves. Other athletes are not just off the court they are bad on the court. For example a situation a few years back when Indian Pacers Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson went into the stands and attacked several fans. They suspended for a few games, which was a small penalty to pay. The real sad part is the message and example they sent out to the kids who look up to them. It is also sad that they can just get away with it and just pay a small penalty. So why is it that we look up to people like this? Do we want our future generation to idolize people who break the law and who are violent?

Music affecting Teens in America

Rap music has a bad influence on teenagers: bullshit or fact?

by Flip Schrameijer

Ask your grandparents how their parents reacted when they listened to jazz music when they were your age. They may tell you that the police beat the stuffing out of dear old Granddad when he attended a concert by Lionel Hampton in 1953.

Lionel Who? Yes. But that was half a century ago!

Jazz. Yuck! That's really stuffy old music! you might say. Negro music it was called in the newspapers in those days. And that was considered very bad influence to young people.

Or, ask your parents. Maybe they will tell you about when they were beaten up by the coppers during a concert of the Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones?! But Mick Jagger is Sir Mick now. Surely he didn't have a bad influence on my sweet Mom and Dad?

So, what's new? Now it's rap and hip hop. A new generation of scientists is worried that their children will start having sex at thirteen because they listened to rap music. OK, some rappers don't beat about the bush. Sex is on their minds. And it may not be the kind that your parents and teachers feel easy about. But, does listening to rap, or to pop music in general, encourage young people to do things that may be bad for them? Let's lend science an ear.
Is rap music bad for your health?

Yes, say recent American studies, and in more ways than one. A team of researchers from Berkeley, California, investigated more than a thousand American college students between 15 and 26 years of age. Students who often listen to rap music, use more alcohol, more marijuana and more party drugs such as XTC.

It’s a health-risk in another way too, since rap-enthusiasts appear more aggressive as well: they are more often in fist fights and are more likely to threaten others with a knife or a gun. And risk being hurt by the way.

And it is rap music especially, the researchers say. Rock & Roll fans appear to be less aggressive, while Reggae-lovers use more marijuana – of course – but considerably less party drugs. Techno-fans use somewhat more XTC, but overall rap comes out ‘worst’.

Three years earlier, American researchers from Atlanta, Georgia, reported a study of more than 500 black girls, age 12 to 17. They interviewed the girls three times over a period of three years. They were so selected that at the first interview all of them were virgins. Of course, many of them had kissed, ‘made out’, or had engaged in more ‘advanced’ amorous activity. A year later, 17 percent had had sexual intercourse and another two years later 36 percent. Many others who hadn’t had intercourse, had gone further in other, more advanced activities.

The researchers found that girls who had watched rap videos for more than an hour a day were the most likely to have started sex early. They had had had multiple sexual partners two times more often than the ones who watched considerably less. Also, they were one and a half times more likely to have acquired a new sexually transmitted disease, and used drugs and alcohol. The statistics are very convincing on this point. (See for both articles the sources below.)
Do you believe it?

Research like this is about you and the behaviour of other young people. And it can easily be different from your own experiences. When rap music makes you and your friends feel happy, you immediately think someone who says rap leads to alcoholism must be mad. Moreover, when none of your rap loving friends ever used drugs or behaved aggressively, you will think researchers who say these things must be dreadfully out of touch with reality.

Maybe they are a horrible gang of elderly people who have no appreciation for your favorite music. Or old people who have forgotten that at one time they themselves loved Rock & Roll, or the Rolling Stones. Maybe they had quarrels with their parents about their music but totally forgot about them.

This may be your initial response: in fact questioning the motives of the researchers. But, sorry, it’s the wrong response, because it’s unscientific. We cannot ignore the outcome of research, simply because we don’t like it or haven’t experienced it ourselves. The motives or the age of the researchers is totally irrelevant! The only thing that counts is the quality of the research itself.
Cause, effect, or something else?

Image
The big question is: do these investigations indeed prove that watching rap videos or listening to rap is the cause for early sex, drug-taking, drinking or aggression. For instance: it could well be that girls who have sex at an early age are later attracted to rap videos that present sex as something fun, or even glamorous.

This possibility could be ruled out, however, because the researchers found that watching these videos happened before the increased sexual activity. That is why the girls were interviewed over a three year period.

In the first study about drinking, drug-taking and aggression however, the students were only interviewed once. So this possibility could not be ruled out, and the researchers indeed say exactly that. In other words: it could well be that students who like drinking, drug-taking and aggressive behaviour, start listening to rap music afterwards. Listening to rap music could be the effect and not the cause.

So, one thing could be the cause of the other, or the other way around. But it could well be that something else causes the two kinds of behaviour: drinking, aggression and premature sex on the one hand and listening to rap music and watching rap videos on the other.

This ‘something else’ could be all kinds of things and is called ‘third factors’. In the case of the black girls for instance, the researchers looked at the factor ‘parental guidance’. Girls who are often alone at home or whose parents often don’t know where they are, might have more opportunity to watch rap videos and engage in sex and drinking. Statistical analysis showed however that parental guidance was not such a ‘third factor’.

Image
In the study with the students and rap music the researchers give a lot of attention to possible ‘third factors’. They included ‘sensation seeking’ (such as going to wild parties, doing scary things, doing “crazy” things just for fun) in their analysis and find this to be important.

In other words: people who like certain ‘dangerous’ behaviour and who like drinking, fighting and/or drug-taking also tend to like to listen to rap music. It might well be, the researchers say, that when ‘sensation seeking’ is taken into account fully, there is no link at all between rap music and drinking, fighting or drug-taking.

The researchers add it might be something different altogether such as the lifestyle of these young people that might explain a preference for rap music, as well as for drinking, drug-taking and/or aggressive behaviour.

The trouble with these third factors is that all possible third factors have to be identified and taken into account. At the moment there is not enough research into this subject. We cannot rule out that there are yet unknown third factors behind the relationship between rap and different kinds of unhealthy behaviour.
Bullshit or something else?

So: is it bullshit to say rap is dangerous to young people?

Frankly: we don’t know. Until today the research cannot decide what's true and what's not. We cannot say the dangers of rap have been proven, nor have they been disproved.
What do you think?

With what you know now, you can make up your own mind. Let me give you some of my ideas.

I think the so called ‘third factors’ are really important. This simply means there is a reason why people who tend to engage in any of these behaviours: drinking, drug-taking, premature and dangerous (including unprotected) sex, or any combination of them, also listen more often than others to rap music, or watch rap video clips.

We do not believe that many young people who don't show these behaviours will start doing so just because they listen to, or watch rap. Of course there will always be some for whom rap music will be the last push.

When in doubt, it often helps to turn a question upside down. So you can ask yourself why listening and watching rap would not influence one’s behaviour, if only a little. It seems unlikely that watching rap stars for several hours a day having fun with certain things would leave no effect at all.

Image

Just think of this. Hard liquor used to be totally absent in the American rap-scene ten years ago, while today it is shown in most rap-videos. Nine out of ten rap-stars have since signed contracts with the liquor industry, according to Denise Herd of the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health. Listen to this radio interview.

Obviously the liquor industry believes that rap promotes drinking, or they would not invest large sums of money in making hard liquor look cool in rap videos.
